a 280z restoration one morning at a time
I was on Santana Row picking up a few things for Valentine’s Day when I spotted a 240z in the parking lot.
A little worse for wear, but looked like it was being driven! Missing some emblems, wood-composite steering wheel, wood shift knob, and sported a 280z vented hood and 280z/zx wheels.
What is really great about this one despite it’s condition, is the low VIN! Check it: 23,270! Which would make it a 1971 Datsun 240z “Series II”. Zpotted.
I spy with my little eye…
Ever experience getting a new car, and thinking, ‘wow, there just aren’t that many around’, then shortly after driving it off the lot, sure enough you’re seeing that car everywhere?
It’s always true that once you’ve begun to pay attention to a car, they seem to pop up. Of course if it’s a car you don’t mind looking at, that’s not quite a bad thing. Heading down the street, outta the corner of my eye, I managed to spot something about 200ft away:

haha! A white 260z 2+2!
Since then I’ve driven by a few times and noticed it hasn’t moved at all, so though it seems to have a decent exterior, it’s probably just parked there to stay. Maybe if i have time, i’ll inquire what it’s deal is.
Took the McKee on ramp to 101 this morning only to find a white S30 (240z or 260z) pull up behind me! A pleasant surprise! A quick wave to each other and we zoomed off in separate directions. I noticed as it turned onto McKee that it had a gray passenger front fender amongst it’s relatively all white body.
Cruisin’ around downtown with Thanh, taking a different route to a familiar restaurant, and spotted a red Datsun 240z! Of course I had to make a u-turn and check it out :]
This 240z is a little worse for wear, certainly looking like it gets used. It does have some interesting features to it though: sports a modern valence, side skirts, wheel well lip rubber, and look at that, a 280z hood. I wonder what’s lurking underneath…
Rolling on 280zx wheels – perhaps another hint at it’s internal upgrades.
